“…people who have managed to stay alive by hiding between the covers of a book.” Trust EB White to come up with exactly the right turn of phrase. For thousands of years people have passed forward their thoughts and ideas through books, and before there were books, by painting on walls and carving on monuments. How impoverished we would be without books! Yet they also remind us to be humble in our brash self-centered, technically advanced era, telling us that some of the greatest thinkers lived hundreds or thousands of years ago.
