I must say that as hilarious as this is I am sort of embarrassed by it too. I mean, what other profession regularly does stuff like this? Librarians are always complaining how they never get any respect and are never taken seriously and then they turn around and do stuff like this. Oh, I laughed, and I have had several librarians ask me if I have seen the video yet because they thought it was hilarious. But as a student and someone just starting out on a library career I see these two conflicting tendencies and gawp in wonder when I hear complaints about not being taken seriously.

Good point, Stefanie. I always get the impression that these antics are meant to show that librarians aren't dour, shushing, authoritarians, but on the other hand you want to be taken seriously as information specialists, an extremely important function in the information age. Does being taken seriously require seriousness? I don't know. If I think of the IT sector, they are pretty well known for being unconventional and zany, but they are still appreciated and rewarded for their technical expertise. Maybe there is a way to make it work.

Well I'll take your impression as a good sign! πŸ™‚ I wonder if it might have something to do with the fact that the majority of the library profession is made up of women. IT is mostly men so they have the cultural advantage of generally being taken more seriously. Maybe there is a way for librarians to be zany and be taken seriously but I still can't help but worry a little bit.

Another good point. Women are often caught in a catch-22: if we're serious, we're seen as boring killjoys; if we're fun, we're seen as bubbleheads. I hope that since computers are heavily involved in modern librarianship that some IT “brain cred” will rub off on librarians.

Some of it is, but guess who are filling the more techie library jobs like systems librarian and digital librarian? If you say men you get a gold star πŸ™‚

  6. Sylvia says:

Hmm, I'm not sure I want that gold star!
