Bibliophiles: "Like a swarm of locusts"

This was the scene at a warehouse in Bristol, England. Apparently, the previous tenant, a discount bookseller, left behind a few gazillion of its books and the management figured the best way to clear their building was to invite the public to come and take what they wanted. They didn’t have to ask twice! According to the Daily Mail, thousands of bibliophiles showed up and have been taking books away by the carload. It’s not a very pretty sight, but it’s better than sending them straight to the recycler. At least this way they have a chance at another life.

Wow. Too bad it's so far away …

  2. Kailana says:

That's awesome! Wouldn't mind something like that in my neck of the woods!

  3. AndrewL says:

My first thought was why do people have to be such selfish slobs as to leave books on the ground in such a way.

  4. Sylvia says:

It looks like the books on the floor were originally in boxes and got dumped out. It's a mess but who is going to volunteer to shelve thousands of books that are being given away for free?

  5. Stefanie says:

Wow, I wish at this moment I lived near Bristol or at least was on vacation there! I'm still laughing at your post title 😀

  6. Sylvia says:

My title might be unfair because it was more likely book dealers who were the first wave, as they are at community book sales. Would real bibliophiles dump a box of books onto the ground? I don't know.

  7. Jodie says:

What?! But I was just there, why couldn't they ahve done it then?

  8. びっくり says:

I don't think I would have gotten any books. I would have been too busy stacking them and scolding people who were standing on them. 🙂

  9. wil says:

Ack! What a mess…but looks fun too.

  10. Sylvia says:

LOL Bikkuri! Your comment makes me think you're in the right country. 😉

  11. Sylvia says:

Jodie, how rude of them not to hold their giveaway when you were there! Of course if they had then you'd have to convince the airline to let you check a few boxes of books with your luggage… 😉
